Evaluating the preliminary task
In my preliminary task my group and I were asked to film a short video, no longer than 30 seconds, using any storyline we choose. We were also taught about the 3 basic continuity rules and were asked to include these rules in our short video. These rules are; shot reverse shot, where one character is show looking at a another character (often off screen), and the other character is show looking back at the first character. Secondly, match on action, where the shot cuts fromone angle to another following the action from the first shot. Finally, the 180 degree rule; where two characters in the same scene keep the same left/right relationship throughout the shot.
In my task my role was to play one of the two characters featured in the filming. We filmed all 3 continuity rules. Firstly match on action; we filmed this by having two angles of me opening the door and walking through it. We did this by filming me walking through the door from numerous angles such as a long shot and a medium shot. Also, we did a close up from a high angle shot over the shoulder shot of my hand opening the door. Secondly shot reverse shot; we did this by filming Bart’s and mine reactions as we spoke to each other by using an over the shoulder shot which shows my perspective on Bart and vice versa, this was whilst we speaking. Finally, we filmed the 180 degree rule again whilst Bart and I were talking, we did this by ensuring Bart and I stayed on the same side of the screen at all times whilst we were talking.
The framing we used was just to make sure everything that needed to be seen was seen, this is because that there’s no point of showing things that aren’t needed as it can confuse the audience and make the scene not make sense. We used a number of shots; firstly medium shots, these were used when I was walking towards the building and when I was walking through it. We used these as establishing shots to show the audience where the character was and to make it easy to see what they were doing and where they were. Secondly, we used medium close ups, these were used when Bart and I were talking to show who was talking, what was being said and above all to show the reaction of the opposing character. Finally, we used close ups, this was used when I opened the door and when I walked up the stairs; again this was used to show what I was doing. Our characters were placed on the screen dependant on the shot; for example, on over the shoulder during the conversation; Bart was on the left and I was on the right, this was to maintain the 180 degree rule.
I felt very happy with the editing of my movie, this is because it ensured the fluidity of the clips we shot and made sure that the film made sense and included all the techniques we were asked to include. The improvements I would suggest to our groups task would be for Bart and I to actually script our dialogue rather than improvising it as this would make it more believable and real. Secondly, the lighting on the balcony could have been improved as it looks like Bart and I are further away than we are as one of us is darker than the other. Overall I was happy with the end project as we incorporated all 3 continuity rules and in the relevant way, the camera work was fluid and not shaky and the editing was professional and consistent. Also, I feel we worked well as a group because everyone had a role to play on and off camera. Bart and I were acting, Charlotte filmed and molly edited. We worked with maturity as there was no disagreement with who did what. Finally, I feel confident using iMovie as I have learnt all the basic functions with ease in previous projects in class.
